Can an electric car's 12-volt battery fail?

The auxiliary battery powers electronics and control systems needed to activate the vehicle. Its symptoms can look like a main-battery problem.

What it may indicate

  • Displays, locks or electronics behave erratically
  • The vehicle will not enter ready mode despite traction-battery charge
  • Multiple electrical warnings appear at once

What to check

  • Test the auxiliary battery and its charging system using the correct procedure
  • Inspect connections and terminals
  • Confirm the manufacturer-specified replacement battery

When to prioritize an inspection

Do not jump-start or disconnect components without checking the manufacturer's procedure; some vehicles require specific steps to protect electronics.
