Why are my brakes making noise?

Brake noise may come from pads, rotors, debris, hardware or uneven wear. The type of sound and when it occurs help guide inspection.

What it may indicate

  • Squeaking while braking
  • Metallic grinding noise
  • Knocking or vibration during braking

What to check

  • Inspect pad thickness and condition
  • Check rotors and brake hardware
  • Look for contamination, loose parts or uneven wear

When to prioritize an inspection

If there is strong metal-on-metal noise, reduced braking performance or a warning light, prioritize inspection before further driving.
