Why does my car jerk when I accelerate?

It helps to determine whether the jerk coincides with a gear change, certain RPM, engine temperature or a specific load condition.

What it may indicate

  • Jerking while accelerating from low speed
  • The symptom appears during gear changes
  • A check-engine light, vibration or power loss appears with it

What to check

  • Identify speed, RPM and conditions when it occurs
  • Read engine and transmission fault data
  • Inspect ignition, fuel or transmission based on the observed pattern

When to prioritize an inspection

If shifts become severely harsh, power drops significantly, the check-engine light flashes or the vehicle may stall, prioritize inspection.
