Why does my car vibrate when braking?

Vibration may be felt through the steering wheel, brake pedal or body. The speed at which it appears and whether it happens only while braking help separate brake issues from wheel or suspension concerns.

What it may indicate

  • Steering wheel vibration while braking
  • Pulsation through the brake pedal
  • Shaking that increases at certain speeds

What to check

  • Inspect rotors, pads and braking components
  • Check wheels, tires and balancing
  • Inspect suspension and steering play if the vibration remains

When to prioritize an inspection

If vibration is severe, braking effectiveness drops, you hear metal-on-metal noise or the vehicle pulls while braking, prioritize an inspection.
