What should you do when the check engine light comes on?

The engine warning light can be triggered by sensors, ignition, fuel mixture, emissions or other systems. Reading a fault code is a starting point, not a complete diagnosis.

What it may indicate

  • The light stays on continuously
  • The light flashes with power loss or misfiring
  • Fuel economy, idle or engine response changes

What to check

  • Read diagnostic trouble codes
  • Interpret codes together with symptoms and measurements
  • Avoid replacing sensors based only on a code without confirming the cause

When to prioritize an inspection

If the light flashes, the engine runs very poorly or power drops significantly, reduce vehicle use and prioritize diagnosis.
