Why is my car losing coolant?

Repeated coolant loss deserves inspection. Some leaks are visible while others appear only under pressure or operating temperature.

What it may indicate

  • Coolant level repeatedly drops
  • Drops or stains appear under the vehicle
  • Sweet smell, steam or rising engine temperature

What to check

  • Inspect visually with the engine cold
  • Check hoses, connections, radiator and reservoir
  • Pressure-test the system if the leak is not obvious

When to prioritize an inspection

Do not open a hot cooling system. If temperature rises or coolant drops rapidly, shut the engine down safely and seek assistance.
