Why is the engine overheating?

High temperature may relate to low coolant, leaks, cooling fans, thermostat, water pump or other issues that require inspection.

What it may indicate

  • Temperature gauge rises above its normal range
  • Temperature or coolant warning appears
  • Steam, a sweet smell or visible coolant loss

What to check

  • Stop in a safe place if temperature keeps rising
  • Allow the engine to cool before checking levels
  • Inspect for leaks and cooling-system operation

When to prioritize an inspection

Do not open a hot cooling system. If the gauge reaches a critical zone or steam appears, shut the engine down safely and seek assistance.
