Why do I smell fuel in or around my car?

A brief smell after refueling can occur, but a persistent odor inside or around the vehicle deserves inspection for vapor or liquid leaks.

What it may indicate

  • Strong fuel odor persists after driving
  • Stains or wetness appear near the vehicle
  • A check-engine light appears with the odor

What to check

  • Avoid ignition sources and look for obvious leaks without touching hot components
  • Inspect cap, lines, EVAP and injection systems as applicable
  • Diagnose the vehicle if the odor persists

When to prioritize an inspection

If there is a visible leak, very strong odor, smoke or fire risk, shut the vehicle down safely, move away and seek assistance.
