Why has the steering become heavy?

The cause depends on whether the vehicle uses electric, electro-hydraulic or hydraulic assistance. Low electrical-system voltage can also affect some electric-assist systems.

What it may indicate

  • The steering wheel requires more effort than normal
  • A steering or EPS warning appears
  • Power assistance fails intermittently

What to check

  • Identify the vehicle's power-steering type
  • Check power supply and fault codes where applicable
  • Inspect components, fluid or assist system according to design

When to prioritize an inspection

If assistance disappears suddenly or steering develops looseness, binding or loud noise, avoid unnecessary driving and prioritize inspection.
