What should you do if the oil-pressure light comes on?

An oil-pressure warning is different from a routine maintenance reminder. It should be taken seriously and handled according to the owner's manual.

What it may indicate

  • A red oil warning remains on while the engine runs
  • Abnormal mechanical noise appears
  • The warning occurs at idle or during maneuvers

What to check

  • Stop safely if the manual instructs you to shut the engine down
  • Check level only using the manufacturer procedure
  • Diagnose actual oil pressure, sensor and lubrication system before continued use

When to prioritize an inspection

Driving with insufficient oil pressure can cause severe engine damage. If the warning persists, do not continue using the engine until the cause is diagnosed.
