What can exhaust smoke color indicate?

Visible exhaust smoke does not have one universal cause. Engine temperature, duration, smell and color offer clues, but diagnosis requires checking the vehicle.

What it may indicate

  • Persistent white smoke after the engine is warm
  • Blue smoke associated with oil consumption
  • Dark smoke with high fuel use or reduced performance

What to check

  • Note when the smoke appears and whether it persists
  • Check oil and coolant levels when the engine is cold
  • Diagnose engine and combustion systems before replacing parts

When to prioritize an inspection

If smoke is heavy, the engine overheats, fluids drop quickly or the engine runs very poorly, avoid continued driving and seek assistance.
