Electric and hybrid car problems and maintenance

Understand charging, range, auxiliary-battery and electrical-system symptoms before choosing a service. Diagnosis should always follow the vehicle manufacturer's procedure.

EV diagnosis is different

Battery EVs, plug-in hybrids and conventional hybrids share some systems, but they are not diagnosed the same way. The connector, onboard charger, traction battery, 12-volt battery, thermal management and software can produce similar symptoms.

High voltage: do not service without training

Do not open, disconnect or handle high-voltage components, the traction battery, inverter or orange high-voltage cabling. After a crash, flooding, smoke, unusual odor or a high-voltage battery warning, avoid intervention and seek qualified assistance.

Charging and range depend on the vehicle and conditions

Charging power can vary with temperature, battery state of charge, charger, electrical installation, vehicle limits and thermal management. Reduced range does not automatically mean the traction battery has failed.

Lower maintenance does not mean zero maintenance

EVs often eliminate tasks such as engine-oil changes, but tires, brakes, suspension, climate systems, cooling where applicable, the auxiliary battery and manufacturer-specific inspections still matter.
